There is nothing worse than receiving a remedial massage, only to be disappointed by your therapist’s work. It’s disappointing to feel underwhelmed with the result of a ‘bad massage’ because your body’s tension, pain and ailments will still be there! Ah, we hear you! This is not the only downside.
An unqualified ‘therapist’ can be counterproductive and almost always ineffective.
It is the counterproductive aspect that concerns us because a bad therapist could be doing more damage than good to your injury and/or ailment. And furthermore, if it is ineffective – you are simply wasting your time and money!
A qualified Remedial Massage Therapist will be equipped with the right knowledge to identify sources of pain. They will tailor specific treatments based on each individual patient. However, we are not saying that all those with remedial massage qualifications will be ‘good’, so let us outline for you some elements that attribute to a good Remedial Massage Therapist.
Here we outline what a good Remedial Massage Therapist does:
Asks you the right questions:
Effective therapists will have the experience and knowledge to ask you appropriate questions. Questions around your medical history, working background, exercise routines and others which enable them to ascertain causes of your pain/tension.
They will remember and use this information to customise a treatment that suits you. A good Remedial Massage Therapist will never use a ‘one size fits all’ approach in their therapy.
Patient care manner and service is exceptional:
A good therapist will be professional and able to make you feel comfortable and put you at ease. They will ensure that throughout the entire remedial massage – you are as comfortable as possible – checking in with you as they move through different areas.
Listens to the your needs:
Listening to you throughout your massage session and checking in with you is important. Even interpreting body language is essential to ensure that the pressure is okay for you in the various places they are working on. Sometimes you may need lighter pressure in some areas than in others. You may be experiencing referral pain that needs to be addresses during the session and a good therapist will pick up on this.
Has the appropriate skill and technique:
There is no doubt about it – if the therapist doesn’t know and implement the right technique for your ailment and/or goals, it will be ineffective! Because it won’t achieve relief from muscle tension. It won’t loosen muscles and improve blood flow to them and you wouldn’t feel more relaxed after their massage.
Ask yourself if you feel improved movement and reduced pain in those areas that were tight prior to the massage? A good therapist will ensure that they are applying the right technique based on the ailment/goals you have. Again, it comes back to the ‘one size does not fit all’.
